About Computer Vision Syndrome

Computers have now become like telephones-found in every office and most homes Computer use is a high visual demand task and has resulted in a number of visual problems. Eye or vision problems directly related to computer use are collectively called the computer vision syndrome

Eye strain Headache-may affect the front, back or one half of the head. Usually occurs towards the end of the day. Rare/Absent on weekends/holidays. Blurred or double vision Dry/irritated eyes Neck and Back ache Light sensitivity Slow refocusing. These are due to a combination of factors like poor work habits, uncorrected refractive error, improper lighting etc.

REDUCING OR ELIMINATING COMPUTER VISION SYNDROME allows more comfort and better productivity.

  • Position the computer monitor correctly-35-40 inches from your eye and 4-9 inches below your eye level. This exposes less of the eye surface and reduces tear film loss.
  • Ensure adequate lighting-however large windows/very bright lights causes glare.
  • Let the screen contain dark characters against a light background with good contrast.
  • Take a break of 2 min every half hour-look at a distant object. Remember to blink frequently.
  • Get an eye check and wear correct prescription glasses if needed. An antiglare coating may help. If you are over 40 you may need special glasses.
  • Lubricating eye drops which relieve some of the discomfort are often useful
  • Convergence exercises for the near work muscles may allow more comfortable viewing
